A Comprehensive Guide to Using Chai Tea
Not long ago, I bought a pretty large bag of chai tea because, well, I love chai tea! The taste is incredible—warm and spiced—and the smell? It’s pure comfort in a cup. Maybe that’s odd to say, but it’s true. While I’m no expert in chai tea, I’m naturally curious and wanted to know more about it. I’ve always been an herb lover (anyone familiar with Pronounce Skincare knows I’ve worked with hundreds of pounds of herbs in my creations). Research has always been a passion of mine—maybe it’s all those degrees I’ve collected—and I find joy in diving deep into a topic. So, I set out to learn everything I could about chai tea. As I share what I’ve discovered, I’ll also mention what I’ve personally tried. Let’s dive in!

What is Chai Tea?
While researching, I found on Harvard that chai tea, more accurately known as masala chai (“spiced tea” in Hindi), is a centuries-old beverage originating in India. Traditionally, it’s a blend of black tea, milk, sweeteners, and spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger. The chai tea I purchased in bulk is an organic chai loose leaf tea that is raw and unsweetened, which gives me the flexibility to prepare it in countless ways. It’s not a pre-mix full of sugars, which is what you will often find at a coffeeshop.
The specific blend I love includes the following specific ingredients:
- Organic Chinese Keemun Black Tea: Keemun black tea is known for its smooth, floral, and slightly smoky notes.
- Organic Indian Assam Black Tea: Assam black tea is a bold, malty tea that forms a strong foundation for the chai blend.
- Organic Spice Blend: Cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger root, and pepper provide warmth, sweetness, and a spicy kick.
The Taste Profile
Raw chai tea offers a bold and complex flavor:
- Tea Base: A robust combination of smooth Keemun and malty Assam teas.
- Spices: Sweet and earthy cinnamon, floral and citrusy cardamom, spicy ginger, aromatic cloves, and a subtle heat from black pepper.
It’s perfect for customizing—you can adjust sweetness, creaminess, or spice levels to suit your taste.
Health Benefits of Chai Tea
Your chai tea is more than delicious; it’s packed with health benefits:
- Rich in Antioxidants: The Keemun and Assam black teas are loaded with catechins and theaflavins, which help combat oxidative stress and support heart health.1
- Digestive Support: Ginger and cardamom soothe the stomach, aid digestion, and alleviate bloating.2
- Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Cloves and ginger help reduce inflammation in the body.3
- Immune Boost: Cinnamon and cardamom have antimicrobial properties that support overall immunity.4
- Energy Boost: The caffeine from black tea provides a gentle pick-me-up without the jitters of coffee.5
How Much Caffeine Does It Contain?
Each serving of your chai tea contains 30-50 mg of caffeine per cup, depending on steeping time. That’s less than a typical cup of coffee (80-100 mg), making it a great alternative for a gentle energy boost.6
How to Brew the Perfect Cup
- Simple Brew:
- 1 tsp loose leaf chai tea per cup of boiling water (about 8 oz).
- Steep for 3-5 minutes, strain, and enjoy.
- Traditional Masala Chai:
- Combine 1 tsp chai tea, 1/2 cup water, and 1/2 cup milk in a saucepan.
- Simmer for 10 minutes, sweeten to taste, and strain.
- Iced Chai:
- Brew a strong chai concentrate, sweeten while hot, then pour over ice for a refreshing twist.
