A Simple Start for Kitchen Confidence

If there’s one thing my 13-year-old son Ollie has been eager to do lately (besides football and wrestling), it’s spending more time in the kitchen. He’s at an age where independence and curiosity go hand-in-hand. I couldn’t be more excited to foster his interest in cooking! The classic fried bologna sandwich recipe is the perfect place to start—simple, nostalgic, and just plain fun to make. It’s a great recipe for kids who want to learn basic kitchen skills while preparing something delicious they can feel proud of.

Why this recipe?

This recipe isn’t just about making a sandwich—it’s about building confidence and enjoying the process. Cooking doesn’t have to be intimidating or complex, especially for kids. By starting with familiar ingredients and straightforward techniques, kiddos get a sense of accomplishment. They learn practical skills like using a skillet, buttering bread, and assembling ingredients. It’s the kind of foundation that can inspire kids to explore more creative dishes in the future.

Beyond that, there’s just something undeniably satisfying about the crispy edges of fried bologna. I mean, the way melted cheese brings it all together just kinda unlocks memories, you know!? Add a few personal touches with toppings and condiments (maybe some homemade ketchup you can make with the kiddo!), and you’ve got a sandwich that’s both classic and customizable.

But Bologna Isn’t “Real Food”—Why Is This on Scratch Mommy?

I know what you’re thinking: bologna? Isn’t it processed junk? Yes, it is, and I’m not here to argue otherwise. But let’s be real—sometimes food is about more than just nutrition. This is a sandwich I grew up eating, and it carries a sense of nostalgia that makes it special to me. It reminds me of simpler times, when the smell of frying bologna was a comforting promise of a quick and satisfying meal. I mean, even Snoop Dogg has a favorite bologna sandwich!

The truth is, not every single thing we eat has to meet strict “real food” standards to have a place in our lives. Teaching kids to cook involves more than just ingredients; it’s about fostering a love of the kitchen and building memories together. This recipe does exactly that for Ollie and me, and I hope it can for your family, too.

Course Main Course, Snack
Cuisine American
Servings 1 sandwich

Equipment

  • 1 Skillet or frying pan – this Ninja set is the best I have ever had!
  • 1 Spatula
  • 1 Knife (for spreading or slicing, if needed)

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of bread your choice: white, wheat, or sourdough
  • 1-2 slices of bologna
  • Butter or mayonnaise optional, for toasting the bread
  • Cheese slice optional, American or cheddar works great
  • Condiments mustard, mayo, or maybe some homemade ketchup, etc.
  • Optional toppings lettuce, tomato, pickles, or onion

Instructions

Prepare the Bread

  • If you like toasted bread, spread a light layer of butter or mayonnaise on one side of each slice.

Toast the Bread (Optional)

  • Place the bread, buttered/mayo side down, in the skillet over medium heat until golden. Remove and set aside.

Cook the Bologna

  • Heat the skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the bologna slice(s). Use a knife to make 2-3 small slits around the edges to prevent curling.
  • Fry for about 1-2 minutes per side, until browned and slightly crispy.

Assemble the Sandwich

  • Place the cooked bologna on one slice of bread.
  • Add cheese (if desired) while the bologna is still hot so it melts slightly.
  • Spread condiments on the other slice of bread.
  • Add any toppings you like (lettuce, tomato, onions, etc.).

Put it Together

  • Place the second slice of bread on top, cut the sandwich in half (if you want), and serve!

  1. Jess (admin) here! Of course I give this 5 stars!! My kiddo loves a quick bologna sandwich and I love that he can make it himself (…when he wants to lol). I also love a good bologna sandwich on occasion. I sometimes put chips on mine. BBQ are the best. 😉
