Carrier oils may be infused in a few different ways. If you have time and are working in advance, try the solar method.
A.) To infuse oils using the solar method, place herbs into a clean jar and add the carrier oil. Close jar and leave herbs to infuse in a sunny spot for 2-3 weeks. Make sure your lid is secured tightly and your herbs are totally submerged into the carrier oil. As you think of it, stop by and give your jar a gentle shake every now and then.
If you need the oil sooner, infuse using the oven method.
B.) To infuse using the oven method, place herbs in an ovenproof bowl or baking dish. Stir to combine. (Try to submerge all of the herbs, but don't worry if they are not completely covered).Preheat oven to 300 degrees and place bowl with her/oil mixture into the oven. Turn the oven off and leave to infuse for 3-4 hours. Once infused, remove from the oven and strain out the herbs.
*To strain, place a piece of cheesecloth across a bowl and pour the herbs and oils into it. It will look like here are more herbs than oil! Squeeze mixture inside the cheesecloth to help extract all of the oil.
Step Two: Make the Salve
Place the infused carrier oil and beeswax into the top of a double boiler (a glass bowl over a low temperature, not boiling, pot of shallow water).
Warm until melted.
Once melted, transfer to jars or tins. Add a few drops of essential oil, if using. Stir with a toothpick to disperse.
Leave to cool, then cap and label.
Notes
Do not let water get into the salve as it could encourage mold growth. Make sure all tools used for making salve are clean and dry.
